LEAD STORY

"Sun pushes new version of Java 2 Standard Edition"
Sun is showing off the "ultrasound" of its new baby, J2SE version
1.4. The baby is due this fall, with a beta version due to start
kicking around the first week in June. Version 1.4 will come loaded
with Java API for XML processing and a new scalable network I/O
(input/output) API for high-performance Web and application servers.
The XML Parser will be integrated as part of the core platform.
Sixty-four-bit support for the Solaris SPARC platform? It's in there!

[1.] "Sun beefs up simulation centers"
Sun is adding a data warehousing component to its customer
infrastructure simulation centers. It should allow enterprise
customers give their warehousing plans a sneak preview before they
plunk down cash for "the whole movie." The service is available now
at the Menlo Park, Calif., facility, and there are plans to expand to
50 locations worldwide in the next few quarters.

[2.] "Sun Micro falls on lower sales, profit forecasts"
Sun's shares took a beating after the company trimmed its Q4 fiscal
forecast. Sun stock fell nearly 9% after that announcement.

[3.] "Sun Microsystems 'bans' the Internet"
The Register claims Sun is cracking down on Internet use at the
office. A leaky memo from Sun's internal IT department to Sun staff
supposedly tells employees to lay off the Internet between June 3 to
July 7 and use it only for what's absolutely necessary. This may save
the company some money and help its financial results look a little
meatier. Sun's other cost-cutting plan, mandatory vacations, begins
July 1st.

[4.] "Vendors offer slew of Itanium wares"
Hardware and software vendors are coming out of the woodwork and
bearing gifts to celebrate Itanium's birth. This could be the
"anti-chip" as far as Sun is concerned, because a new era of
competition is beginning. Hewlett-Packard, Red Hat, Compaq, Dell and
Emulex are all hopping aboard the bandwagon, with Itanium-based
products serving as their boarding passes.

A look at an off-the-wall story from the Web...

"Some fight 'cyber' schools in Pennsylvania"
Cyber school may be cool, but the burgeoning movement has angered
some Pennsylvania superintendents who say they didn't know the
virtual schools in their district even existed until they got socked
with the tuition bills. Now, the school board there has filed a
lawsuit against two cyber schools, which enroll about 600 students,
citing the schools were operating illegally under a state-mandated
charter school program. But it may be the tuition bills that have
really gotten their goat. The cost? Anywhere from $5,000 to $11,000
per student.
