LEAD STORY

"Sun veteran Paolini jumping to Zaplet"
One of Sun's Java evangelists is riding off into the sunset. George
Paolini will zip over to Zaplet Inc., a startup his old boss, Alan
Baratz, has started up. One analyst says Paolini's exit could affect
SunONE in the short term.

[1.] "Analyst: Intel's Itanium chip will hurt Sun"
One analyst predicts Intel's new 64-bit Itanium chip will darken
Sun's world and eat away a big piece of its server market pie within
two to three years. Officials at other companies (like Dell) have
hinted that their Itanium-based products will sell for tens of
thousands of dollars less than even Sun's mid-range products. The
analyst says it's time for Sun to let go of its distaste for
third-party processors.

[2.] "Chip tests: Itanium wins some, loses some"
Intel Itanium smacks UltraSPARC III in some areas, but Sun's chip
knocks Intel's block off in other areas. Sun dominates in "integer"
operations. Sun has this advantage too: The fact that customers and
vendors have to make transitions with the Itanium, whereas Sun
customers are guaranteed that software written for earlier UltraSPARC
chips will run fine on the UltraSPARC III.

[3.] "Four storage vendors bundle SAN-in-a-box"
Four storage vendors are apparently better than one. Qualstar,
BakBone, Vixel and Emulex are all bundling together a package that
has most of the ingredients to cook up a storage-area-network. The
package supports Solaris and should be ready to roll this week.

[4.] "Sun looks to open-source systems management"
Over the next few months, Sun is going to be taking nonproprietary
stuff, mixing it with industry standards from the Distributed
Management Task Force (DMTF) and hoping what comes out are
open-source-friendly systems-management products developers can use.

[5.] "Sun refutes Internet 'ban' slur"
Sun has told The Register that it isn't cracking down on Internet use
at the office for the sake of saving money. The company said the memo
"leaked" to the Register is the IT department's annual "remember to
conserve WAN bandwidth" memo and has nothing to do with cutting
costs. Basically Sun doesn't want Web surfing or e-mails with huge
attachments to limit traffic flow.

meets these requirements. It then covers a wide range of application
development technologies, including VisualAge for Java, WebSphere
Studio, and Visual Basic. Users learn not only how to design and

A look at an off-the-wall story from the Web...

"Hormel is resigned to use of 'spam' in Net slang"
Sure, it's side-splittingly funny when a bunch of Vikings sing a
chorus of "Spam, spam, spam, spam..." but who can blame the folks at
Hormel for getting a little edgy every time the name of their most
famous brand of "meat" product is used to denote something most email
users despise? Still, Hormel has decided not to buck popular culture
and says it will no longer fight as aggressively to stamp out the
derogatory use of the term spam. They only ask that when using the
word to describe their luncheon meat, the word be capitalized so that
the terms can be more easily distinguished. Perhaps a better
differentiator is this: One you eat. The other you delete.
