LEAD STORY

"Zander challenges developers to make Net invisible"

Java is like the kid who starts out in the mailroom and works his way
up to vice president of the company. It has gone from little wireless
devices right up through the ranks of the enterprise with the ceiling
of its success still out of sight. Sun's Ed Zander told the keynote
audience at JavaOne that there's still much work to be done,
including making Java invisible.

[1.] "Sun defends Java platform investment"

Sun defended its Java platform, saying the software drove system
sales and was vital to keeping Microsoft from dominating the
Internet. Sun has kept its research and development budget intact and
was not cutting back on Java support, executives said at JavaOne.

[2.] "Sun promotes Java on Cobalt servers"

Sun introduced a developer kit for its Cobalt servers that makes it
easier to use Java software on servers that deliver Web pages, the
company said. The kit comes with features that let the servers run
Java programs called servlets and deliver custom Web pages using the
Java Server Pages software, Sun said. These technologies are built
into an open-source software package that ships with new Cobalt
servers.

[3.] "IPlanet expands Web services"

IPLANET, the company formed by Sun and Netscape, has upgraded two of
its e-commerce Web services applications, including the addition of a
feature that enables automatic transactions to occur if pre-set
conditions are met. The upgrades are designed to bolster iPlanet's
Commerce Services Portfolio, a set of Java-based e-commerce
applications, and a component of Sun's Open Net Environment. The
upgrades will be available this month.

[4.] "Middleware that beats the budget"

A number of open source Java application servers offer comparable
capabilities at a fraction of the cost of big name products from IBM,
BEA and others. Some very capable open-source application servers,
such as Enhydra and JBoss/Server, are free. "Going beyond mere Java
servlet engines geared for dynamic Web sites and database front ends,
these Java 2 Enterprise Edition-compliant servers are suitable for
high-volume transaction processing as well as application and data
integration," says this review.

A look at an off-the-wall story from the Web...

"Vatican: Online evangelization yes, confessions no"

Confession will never become a cyber-sacrament for Roman Catholics.
That's the definitive word from the Vatican. In a document about to
be released, the Church praises the Internet as a "wonderful
instrument for evangelization and pastoral service." But a top
Vatican official says the document will also explain that online
confessions are out of the question.
