[1.] "HP, Compaq back away from Wintel server plans"
Compaq and HP have decided not to resell 32-processor systems based
on Unisys' cellular multi-processing (CMP) technology. Unisys and
Microsoft worked together to develop a large server and operating
system that would pit Wintel against Sun. Compaq doesn't think the
industry will be ready for this stuff until Intel delivers its second
generation of 64-bit processors, code-named McKinley.

[2.] "Gartner predicts massive increase in security spending"
Gartner has been looking into its crystal ball again. It sees U.S.
companies increasing their security spending ten times the current
average between now and 2011. So this means the security business
could be securing a lot of business this decade. And while the ball
is out, Gartner also sees eight out of ten enterprises using the
Internet as a key part of their business by 2004.

[3.] "Trade show attendance down, poll shows"
Thirty-four percent of TechTarget readers have cut back on their
travel plans, a poll showed, as attendance plummets at trade shows
and conferences this year. While the high tech downturn is mostly to
blame, thinning crowds at trade shows are also due to increased
educational opportunities elsewhere, say conference experts.

LEARNING ZONE FEATURED BOOK OF THE WEEK
============================================

"Designing and Programming CICS Applications," by John Horswill
Each part of Designing and Programming CICS Applications addresses
the design requirements for specific components and gives a
step-by-step approach to developing a simple application. The book
reviews the basic concepts of a business application and the way CICS
meets these requirements. It then covers a wide range of application
development technologies, including VisualAge for Java, WebSphere
Studio, and Visual Basic. Users learn not only how to design and
write their programs but also how to deploy their applications.

A look at an off-the-wall story from the Web...

"Next-generation 'buddy list' could transform phone habits"
It's not your father's buddy list. The same kind of technology that
powers instant messaging will be coming to a cell phone near you.
Aptly named Presence, the technology will be able to tell you who has
their phone on, who's on a call and who doesn't really want to be
called - maybe he's at a movie, or she's in the middle of a mud mask.
Eventually, Presence will be able to tell you where your buddies are,
so maybe you can hook up with so-and-so if you see that you're both
at the same boring conference and want to steal away for a while.
Motorola is working on Presence. Look for it to start popping up in
cell phones later this year.
