LEAD STORY

"StarOffice meet Star Wars"
Uncle Sam plans to settle into a new office. The U.S. Defense
Information Systems Agency (DISA) plans to put to work up to 25,000
units of Sun's StarOffice 5.2 software. Applix is being discharged.
This is a good deal for DISA because open-source StarOffice doesn't
have a license fee.

reviews the basic concepts of a business application and the way CICS
meets these requirements. It then covers a wide range of application
development technologies, including VisualAge for Java, WebSphere
Studio, and Visual Basic. Users learn not only how to design and

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story from the Web...
================

"High-tech thieves plant money `bugs'"
Credit card skimming has gone automated. What used to be the domain
of crooked waiters with handheld scanners has rapidly transformed
into high-tech thievery. These days, crooks are placing computer
chips inside point-of-sale credit card terminals that have the
ability to dial out and send the stolen credit card numbers to the
thief's computer. A company called Hypercom discovered the bugs and
issued a warning last week. Naturally, the response from industry
heavyweights like Visa was lukewarm. Until they see the chips as
"prevalent" inside POS terminals, Visa is publicly shrugging its
shoulders at the technique.
