LEAD STORY

"Unix vendors go on offensive"
The masters of the Unixverse are parrying the thrusts of Linux. Unix
vendors like Sun, IBM, HP and Compaq are coming out with more
powerful OSes to combat the open-source threats. Sun, for one, should
beta test Solaris 9 (called Helix) this fall - a version that will
likely be stocked with support for Itanium.

[1] "IBM server sales rise as HP's and Sun's fall, report shows"
IBM is doing something right - Big Blue's worldwide server sales for
Q2 2001 grew more than 10% over the same period last year. By
comparison, Sun's sales were down more than 15% for the same period,
while HP's sales tanked more than 10%.

[2] "Tech job cuts up in July; overall cuts hit new high"
The U.S. hasn't seen a deluge of pink slips like this in years. A
Chicago-based company that keeps track of such things reports the
rate of job cuts has hit a record high, especially in the IT sector.
So far this year 358,375 jobs in the telecommunications, computer and
electronics industries have disappeared. Last year's figure: 26,758
jettisoned jobs!

[3] "Meaner Code Red II worm appears in Asia"
Code Red II, the evil of two lessers, is working its way through
Asia. It's having its way with computers in China, and South Korean
officials think it may have burrowed into the government's systems.

[4] "McAfee wins Net subscription patent"
McAfee.com has beaten everyone to the patented punch. The security
company has gotten a patent for the way it delivers its software and
services over the Internet. So all the companies looking into the
"software as a service over the Internet" strategy better not mess
with McAfee.

[5] "Analysts don't expect Windows XP injunction"
There's been lots of speculation that Windows XP may pay the price
for Microsoft's monopoly game. But analysts don't think the courts
will "set a pick" on XP. Critics say the upcoming OS is just another
poster child for Microsoft's monopolistic practices.

"The Principles of Computer Hardware," by Alan Clements
Ideal for courses in computer hardware, architecture, or digital
design, The Principles of Computer Hardware, 3/e, provides a
comprehensive introduction to the subject. In Alan Clement's noted
student-friendly style, it covers core topics including Boolean
algebra and logic design; number bases and binary arithmetic; the
CPU; assembly language; memory systems; and input/output methods and
devices. It then continues with a discussion of the related topics of
computer peripherals, the hardware aspects of the operating system,
and data communications. This accessible text covers both the 68000
and ARM architectures in a tutorial/lab-based style suitable for a
variety of courses. All chapters in this third edition have been
rigorously updated. Powerful new Windows-based simulation software
allows students to visualize the design of digital circuits. The
chapter on RISC has been completely rewritten to include the ARM
computer, and the tutorial-based introduction to assembly language
now includes many examples.

"Another meaning for 'film short'"
Two thumbs up... two thumbs down. When it comes to the latest movies,
everyone's an expert. But would the Eberts and Roepers of the world
dare to put their money where their thumbs are? Now, thanks to the
Net, there's a way to do just that -- but it's illegal in the U.S.A
British Web site is offering the chance to bet real money on the
success or failure of new motion picture releases. The online
movie-betting service is basically a futures market for films like
Jurassic Park III and Planet of the Apes, instead of pork bellies.
