The iPlanet software line will become a Sun brand -- like Solaris. Security experts and vendors are advising network admins to replace some versions of Sendmail. Apparently the latest open-source versions leave a window unlocked for local hackers. The flaw exists in Sendmail versions above 8.10.0 and through 8.11.5 and in all beta versions of 11.12.0. A fixed version is now available -- more info is at http://www.sendmail.org. SOURCE: Newsbytes http://www.newsbytes.com/news/01/169354.html =============================================== [2] "New virus has offensive streak" What's a good way to "hose" your computer? Open an e-mail or Web page laced with the Trojan.Offensive virus. The pernicious program exploits a flaw in Microsoft's version of the Java Virtual Machine to overwrite the registry and trash Windows computers. A patch has been available to caulk the flaw, so this shouldn't be (knock on wood) outbreak material. SOURCE: CNET http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-6961705.html?tag=lthd =============================================== [3] "IDC: Fault-tolerant Wintel servers pressure Unix vendors" IDC analysts say Unix vendors may need to sharpen their sales pitches thanks to the advent of fault-tolerant Wintel servers. Stratus Technologies has unleashed its ftServer 5200, a fault-tolerant, two-processor server that uses Intel Xeon processors and runs Windows 2000 Advanced Server. The better, stronger, faster server could signal Wintel's advance into Unix territory and force Unix vendors to justify their place in the server market. SOURCE: ENT Magazine http://www.entmag.com/breaknews.asp?ID=4878 =============================================== [4] "Microsoft supported by dead people" Call them the "Microsoft Underground" -- two dead people have apparently written to at least one state attorney general asking him to go easy on the company in the antitrust suit! Those letters may have been sent in by family members of the dearly departed, who are with Microsoft in spirit. Spawned by his Web site, LetMeStayForADay.com, Stopplenberg has been on a three-month trek across Europe. Penniless, Stopplenberg sponges a warm bed, a meal and computer access from generous Europeans responding to his online solicitations for room and board. He's slept in castles and on countless couches. He's even managed clothing and limited travel expenses from several sponsors. And the invitations keep pouring in from South Africa, Asia and even an invite from Jay Leno to appear on the Tonight Show. Leaving Europe, however, will require airfare, and so far there have been no takers interested in footing the bill. File this one under: Stranded.
