Cap Gemini Ernst & Young (CGE&Y) joins other major systems integrators, like Accenture and PricewaterhouseCoopers, to help Sun combine its own Sun Professional Services with the business prowess of its partners. MAJOR VENDORS TOUT UNITED LINUX | vnunet One species of penguin -- that's the goal of the major Linux players. They're coming together for a standard Linux distribution so that only one set of applications need to be written to run on all Linux implementations. They don't want Linux to fragment the way Unix did. Caldera, SuSE, TurboLinux and Connectiva will join IBM, HP, Computer Associates, and Intel to form United Linux. Sun's not on the list -- not yet anyway. ITANIUM 2 SHINES IN INTEL TESTS | eWEEK Intel is feeling awfully chipper about Itanium 2. The company claims the 1 GHz chip is twice as fast as its processor predecessor and more than a match for Sun's UltraSPARC III. These are Intel's own in-house results. The chip, code-named McKinley, should be ready this summer. It's probably sitting in a landfill somewhere giving the environment some toxic lead kisses and remembering the good ol' days when it got turned on. But the dump won't be the destiny of dated hardware much longer. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency wants Americans to treat their old PCs like aluminum cans and recycle them. EPA officials plan to get computer carcasses classified as reusable and encourage recycling. This is all in an effort to get the lead out of the landfills. Many monitors are loaded with lead, which protects you from nasty X-rays generated by the screen. But pitch the old PC into a dump, and the lead doesn't protect -- it poisons.
