LEAD STORY

Sun donates software to Taiwan schools | ZDNet

Taiwan is the latest land of the rising Sun -- the company is trying
to crack the education market there by giving Chinese versions of
StarOffice 6.0 to the National Cheng Kung University. Sun also plans
to donate copies of the software to other schools on the island.
Sun's generosity comes as Taiwan's National Teachers' Association is
asking Microsoft not to charge schools a fee.

LINUX GAINS TRACTION AT GOVERNMENT AGENCIES | The Associated Press
Linux is gaining ground on powerful government computer systems in
the United States and abroad. At first Linux filtered into U.S.
government computers through system administrators who used it
because it is cheap. Now, experts say, agencies are willing to pay
for high-performance hardware tailored to Linux.

ZEUS PASSES SUN IN WEB SERVER MARKET SHARE | Web Host Industry Review
Zeus Technology said its Web server is now the third most popular and
has overtaken Sun's iPlanet "One" Web server for the first time,
based on data from Netcraft, which gathers statistics on Web server
use. Zeus attributed the increase to its product's security and
scalability features.

CAN ORACLE, SUN BOUNCE BACK | Fortune
Sun and Oracle have more than just trash-talking CEOs in common.
Customers often buy their products in tandem: Oracle's heavy-duty
database software and Sun's supercharged computers. Both soared in
the dot-com era, then crashed. Find out how their fearless leaders
will likely set out on two very different paths as they battle back.

Experts dig into .Net this week on Win2000Talk.com

Two years after Microsoft .NET was introduced, most users still don't
know what it is or how to use it. This week on TechTarget's new
online audio show, experts dig in to .NET. The bottom line:
developers should become familiar with Web services protocols and
start experimenting with Microsoft's .NET programming tools. Useful
server products will begin to roll out next year.

THE MISSING LINK | Internet geek is a social animal

Wanna get a life? Log on. A professor at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology says the notion that Internet addicts have no lives and
are nothing but socially-challenged geeks too introverted to
interface with other carbon-based life forms is way off base. He says
Web hounds probably have more friends than most people and that
they're staying online to keep up with everybody, which only
strengthens their people skills. Let's face it -- the Net does make
it possible to keep up with more people. So what about all the
studies that say people who spend hours online are more likely to be
unhappy and lonely? The prof says Netizens are just using their mice
to reach out. (vnunet)
