BUG PUTS UNIX SERVERS IN A BIND | The Register

CERT has a warning for the Unixverse -- a security flaw in DNS
servers running Unix will not be an easy fix. The buffer overflow
issue in DNS Resolver Library was brought to light last week -- the
flaw is bad news for Unix systems using the BIND or BSD resolver
libraries because it can lead to a DoS attack. Evidently, the
problems run even deeper than that -- to the point where
manufacturers may need to overhaul OS binaries.

SECURITY DECISIONS: TCO MODEL PRIORITIZES SECURITY | SearchSecurity
Enterprise security professionals need reputable means of justifying
security purchases, and that requires them establishing a
total-cost-of-ownership model (TCO) and processes that help senior
decision-makers elevate security as a spending priority.

ANALYSTS: VISUAL J# .NET TOOL TO HAVE LIMITED IMPACT | Computerworld
Visual J#.NET will not change life much inside IT departments using
Java, according to analysts. The tool lets developers write
.NET-friendly applications using Java, but those apps only run on
Windows and the .NET framework. Important Java class libraries and
J2EE technologies? Forget about it. "For a truly portable Java
application, a developer would need to stay away from Visual J# and
use a pure Java development tool," said one Giga analyst.

EUROPEANS: MICROSOFT SHOULDN'T SHUT OUT COMPETITORS | AP
Microsoft's Palladium security initiative is fine and dandy, but it
had better play nice with others. That's the general message from the
European Union's antitrust watchdogs who suspect Palladium might shut
out other companies' technologies. Palladium will use Windows and
computer chips to secure data so that only the intended recipient
could use it. Skeptics in Europe wonder if these Palladium-protected
files would be accessible to non-Windows users.

MICROSOFT ONE STEP CLOSER TO SETTLEMENT | CNET
The settlement between Uncle Sam and Uncle Bill (Microsoft) has won
the judge's blessing. U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly has
formally ruled both sides are in compliance with antitrust laws --
the ruling means she is that much closer to approving the settlement
deal. The nine states that think the deal is more like a ripoff still
have their case before the judge. She is considering their request
for stiffer sanctions.

THE MISSING LINK | Chinese vendors tap niche for novel cell phones

China -- the most populous nation in the world and the pickiest
people on earth when it comes to cell phones. About five million of
them are sold every month in China, but they aren't the kinds that
appeal to the rest of the world. Big firms like Ericsson, Motorola,
Nokia and Siemens have found it tough to make a connection with the
finicky and fashion-conscious Chinese, many of whom like to mix
whimsy with their wireless. Small vendors are popping up all over the
place and catering to those tastes. One of them sells a cell phone
wrapped in fish skin (maybe it's waterproof). Another vendor sells a
handset that's covered in diamonds. And yet another sells a phone
that cuts a rug when it rings. (Reuters)
