LEAD STORY

SUN TO RESTORE INTEL SUPPORT FOR SOLARIS | CNET

The wait is over for loyal Solaris/x86 users. Sun has announced plans
to release a version of Solaris 9 for Intel and AMD processors.
Earlier in the year, Sun said it was "deferring productization" of
Solaris/x86, prompting an outcry from the Solaris on x86 community.
Now Sun says the software will be available by January, but it will
come at a price. The product will cost $99 for single-processor
desktop systems and an as-yet undecided higher price for
multiprocessor servers. Those wishing to get an earlier gander at the
OS can get a $20 early access version for testing purposes. Sun says
support is optional and will cost $75 per month for desktop systems
and $1,275 per year for low-end servers.

SUN PROFESSIONAL SERVICES TO FOCUS ON "BLEEDING EDGE" | CRN
Sun's executive vice president of global sales operations recently
told a group of sales channel partners that Sun will focus its
professional services arm on 'bleeding edge' opportunities and leave
traditional sales opportunities to them. The VP, Robert Youngjohns,
also told the group that Sun is committed to improving the mix of
business with the sales channel, sketching a rough goal of 65 percent
of business through partners.

SUN ONE ELITE PROGRAM COMING OCT. 30 | CRN
It's coming on the eve of Halloween -- the new Sun ONE Elite program.
Sun hopes the program will be a big treat that builds on its Storage
Elite triumphs. The storage program rewards solution providers with a
3% rebate on Sun purchases if a quarter of those purchases are
storage-related.

SUN UNVEILS WORKGROUP-LEVEL DAS ARRAYS | vnunet
DAS array sure beats disarray! Sun is releasing some info. on the
first models in its workgroup-level StorEdge 3000 series direct
attached storage (DAS) arrays. StorEdge 3310 will be out in a couple
of weeks and will be a 2U high rack-mountable SCSI-based array with
either a bunch of disks (JBOD) or 1-2 Raid controllers and disks. The
product will connect to Solaris, Linux, Windows NT and Windows 2000
systems with full support for Sun Clusters.

OPEN-SOURCE VENDOR: "MICROSOFT WILL TRY TO KILL US"
Is it showtime for Linux on the desktop? There are plenty of IT
administrators who're ready, particularly in the wake of Microsoft's
Licensing 6.0. But there's work to be done before the penguin is
ready for its desktop close-up. (SearchWin2000.com)

FROM THE FORUMS | Is Sun behaving like Microsoft?

Is Sun behaving like Microsoft with its decision to bundle its entire
software stack with Solaris 9? Some critics have said the decision to
include the Sun ONE App and Web servers is similar to Microsoft's
proprietary approach. Do you agree? Or is it simple enough to go out
and find your own software if you're not interested in using Sun ONE?
The news reporters at SearchSolaris.com want to know your opinion. To

THE MISSING LINK | Wheeeeee! Joyride post gets mechanic canned

A car mechanic's motor mouth threw a monkeywrench in his career when
he went to a Ford Mustang forum on the Net and bragged how he had
taken a customer's car on a 140 mph joyride. It turns out, the car
owner read his post, went to the repair shop's owner, and got the guy
fired. Two morals to this story: Bragging online is a bad idea, and
never take your car to a shop and tell them to make sure that no
"punk" drives your car. (vnunet)
