SUN BEGINS GRID COMPUTING PUSH | vnunet
Sun is rolling out partner programs for resellers designed to push
its grid computing services into the mainstream. Grid technology has
the potential to lower IT costs by sharing the computing or storage
power of multiple networked computers. Sun's new Grid Computing
Solutions Program will target several markets including life
sciences, financial services and electronic design automation. Sun's
grid offering includes architecture services to design the
approximate mix of services, systems and software needed.

SUN GIRDS UP WITH LINUX SECURITY DEVICE | ZDNet
Sun and firewall maker Check Point Software have teamed up to unveil
a new Linux-based security appliance. The new product, the Sun LX50
Firewall/VPN appliance, runs a version of Linux with enhanced
security. The product is built on Sun's LX50 Intel-based server and
supports Check Point's Open Platform for Security specification that
allows integration with products from other software and hardware
makers.

LINDOWS: UNBUNDLED AND READY TO GO | CNET
Lindows is now rarin' to go solo against Microsoft on the desktop.
Lindows OS 3.0 is the first product from Lindows that sells by itself
rather than as part of a bundle. The company said that the OS package
will sell for about $129 and support dozens of Linux applications,
including ones that look a lot like Windows. StarOffice 6.0 word
processing software will be part of the package as well.

SUN'S MCNEALY TAKES ON MICROSOFT AT COMDEX | PCWorld
Sun's Chief Scott McNealy used most of his keynote address at Comdex
to attack Microsoft on everything from office-suite software to the
Xbox game console. The theme of the speech was that Sun's strategy of
selling both hardware and software is better than the Windows/Intel
world's approach. To illustrate his point, McNealy repeatedly
referred to Microsoft and Intel as "General and Motors." McNealy also
used the opportunity to show a demo of SunRay, a server-based
technology that replaces PCs with network appliances. The SunRay used
the Gnome user interface, Sun's StarOffice suite, and Ximian's
Evolution personal-information manager to create a Windows-like
environment.

MCNEALY: IT TOO COMPLEX | Reuters
Scott McNealy seems to have a complex about complexity. Sun's chief
announced this week that the company will spend $10 billion on
research, acquisitions and other programs like marketing, with the
goal being to simplify computing. McNealy said that computing has
gotten so complicated that companies have trouble keeping up --
especially when money is tight.

DELL OFFERS BRIDGE IN UNIX-TO-WINDOWS MIGRATION | TechWeb
Dell has lowered a drawbridge for Unix users -- inviting them to
cross the moat into the castle of Windows servers. Dell Fast Track to
Microsoft Windows is the name of a new service, and it's geared to
help businesses migrate servers, applications and databases (oh my!)
to Windows.

THE MISSING LINK | Think tank debates chip implants for people

Would you like to be treated like a dog? Scientists and privacy
advocates have been debating the pros and cons of implanting people
with microchips. The little glass gadgets can track you, ID you and
tell doctors your medical history should you be unable to do any of
those things. Some people say "chips ahoy" to the idea -- others say
the concept really gets under their skin.
