GOSLING E-MAIL BLAMES SUN FOR JAVA WOES | CRN
Here's the latest tidbit of interest in that clash of the titans
known as "Sun versus Microsoft." Sun is trying to sue Microsoft into
including Java software into Windows XP for the sake of competition.
A lawyer for MS showed the court an e-mail from Sun's James Gosling,
the founding father of Java. The e-mail states that Sun's own
negligence is messing up Java on the client side. MS hopes to show
that Sun's problems with Java are not entirely Microsoft's fault.

SUN, SONY SIGN OFFICE DEAL | IDG News
It looks like StarOffice's star in Europe is on the rise. Sony has
agreed to install version 6.0 of the Sun software in certain Vaio
models to be sold in Europe -- where MS Office rules.

EXPERT: COMPANIES NEED TO PLUG IN TO OPEN-SOURCE | SearchWin2000.com
Linux and open-source software aren't for every situation, but with
Windows licensing costs on the rise, lots of IT administrators in
traditional Windows shops are looking more closely at all of their
options. A co-founder of the Apache Software Foundation talks about
where enterprise Linux and open-source are gaining traction in the
heavily-Windowed world of IT.

MICROSOFT WARY OF LINUX DESKTOP THREAT | Reuters
Somewhere, a penguin's ears are burning. Microsoft's Chief Financial
Officer said this week that if Linux gets a grip in the desktop
market, Windows' growth could be hurt.

LINUX AND .NET TROUNCE UNIX | ZDNet
The future looks anything but bright for proprietary Unix operating
systems. According to a new report from Butler Group, flavors of Unix
from the main vendors, including hardware heavyweights HP, IBM and
Sun, will lose out to Linux, and even Microsoft's emerging .NET
product line.

HP REAPING REWARDS OF ITS HP-UX/TRU64 | SearchHP.com
IDC's latest quarterly server numbers put Hewlett-Packard atop the
worldwide Unix server market in terms of revenue and market share.
The analyst firm said HP's new Tru64 AlphaServer business, acquired
in the Compaq merger, in concert with its growing high-end HP-UX
Superdome success put HP over the top.

THE MISSING LINK | Shut up and drive, or die?

In a turn of events shocking to no one, the Harvard Center for Risk
Analysis has analyzed the risk of talking on your cell phone while
you drive. The results? The wireless, the wheel and well-being are
not, to use an IT term, integrateable. (SearchCRM.com)
