The company is turning to the 12-processor Sun Fire v1280 server to help fight off HP and IBM. The server will cost less than $350,000 and may be rolled out next week. JUDGE STAYS JAVA ORDER | CNET There've been two big developments in the Microsoft/Sun scrap. Most importantly, the judge in the case has given Microsoft a stay, so the company does not have to start shipping Windows with Sun Java until an appeal goes through the system. Right before that, MS proclaimed that it had wrapped up a revised Windows XP Service Pack 1 (called SP1a) that does not include Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine. BATTLE MAY BE BREWING FOR WS-I BOARD SEATS | SearchWebServices.com WebMethods and Cape Clear have both announced that they will run for the two newly-created board of director seats in the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I), but they may end up competing against each other because Sun is still considered a favorite to win one of the seats. SUN EXEC SAYS COMPANY KEY IS SURVIVING AFTER SMP | The Register A Sun exec said last week that one of the company's biggest challenges today is surviving in a "post-SMP" (symmetric multiprocessing) era of computing. Sun's SMP success speaks for itself, so the exec's statement shows that there could be a new Sun rising -- one that fights for the future of systems. A new computerized product is taking the human brain out of the mix when it comes to driving. It could make getting behind the wheel a real no-brainer, which is good because a lot of drivers seem to be short on gray matter.
