FEATURED SECURITY TIP | Apache Web server under attack

Microsoft's Internet Information Server is not the only Web server
product that has vulnerabilities the vendor doesn't want to
acknowledge. Apache 1.3.x for OpenBSD systems has an exploitable
vulnerability that the Apache Software Foundation adamantly claimed
was un-exploitable. Leave it up to the collective Internet
intelligence to discover ways of doing the improbable and even some
of the impossible.

SUN ISN'T NUMBER ONE IN WEB SERVICES POPULARITY CONTEST | TechWeb
Sun is more like number FOUR. In 2003, most systems integrators will
turn to Microsoft .NET, IBM WebSphere, and Oracle to build their Web
services, according to the results of a recent survey of 44
consulting and systems-integration vendors by Gartner Dataquest's IT
Services group. Microsoft .NET was on the radar screen of 58% of the
systems integrators, WebSphere garnered 40% and Oracle came in third,
ahead of fourth-place Sun, at 31%.

QUEST PERFORMASURE TO BE A J2EE APP'S BEST FRIEND | InfoWorld
There's a new quest for Quest Software. The company plans to roll out
a new tool to monitor, analyze and fix J2EE applications.
PerformaSure 2.0 should be ready in March.

BMC BOOSTS UNIX PATROL TOOL | eWEEK
BMC Software has upgraded its Patrol for Unix tool. The new version
(9.0) trims the number of configuration steps and streamlines tool
administration. BMC says the technology significantly reduces the
number of false alerts and offers better event filtering.

BASIC SECURITY TENETS APPLY TO OPEN-SOURCE PROGRAMS TOOL
Making source code available for all to see and manipulate does not
make it secure. Secure development and proper configuration are
essential to the safety of Linux systems as well as proprietary.
Experts examine the pros and cons of open-source code to proprietary
when securing an enterprise perimeter. (SearchSecurity.com)

MS TO SEC: PENGUIN'S PECK IS A THREAT | InternetWeek
Microsoft really does fear the penguin! The company has told the U.S.
Securities and Exchange Commission that open-source software is a
threat to its business model. The company also claimed that the
penguin's peck may mean Microsoft will have to cut the prices of
Windows.

MS AIMS FOR UNIXVERSE WITH NEW RELIABILITY PROGRAM
Microsoft has started a program to drive down the downtime as well as
win more respect from IT managers. One analyst says that the new
Datacenter High Availability Program could help Microsoft counter
critics who say Windows has a reliability problem and is no Unix when
it comes to high-end tasks. (SearchWin2000.com)

THE MISSING LINK | Gabriel leads patron saint pack

You can hear the band playing the new song now -- "When the Saints Go
Surfing In". The Vatican is trying to decide who will be the patron
saint of the Internet, the one to pray to when you need a higher
power for protection from hackers, pop-ups and so forth. Right now,
the archangel Gabriel has a spirited lead, but there is some quality
competition, including a Polish priest who believed in using
technology to spread the word. Saint Clare of Assisi is also in the
running, despite being the current patron saint of television. Can
there be a Saint of All Media? We should know by Easter. Stay tuned.
