Sure, Sun now offers an Intel-based blade server running Linux and later this year will unveil preconfigured Linux desktop bundles. But these systems are primarily for low-end applications like caching, e-mail and firewalls. Sun honchos say the company won't start supporting Linux at the high end until a clear demand presents itself. JAVA IN WINDOWS: IS SUN RUNNING OUT OF TIME? | ZDNet The battle rages on between Sun and Microsoft over inclusion of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in Windows. At stake, according to a U.S. District Court, is the fairness of the fight for middleware supremacy between Java and .NET. One columnist writes that depending on the outcome of the case -- which is far from over -- decision makers should consider the long-term odds of either platform's success before making a strategic decision today. MICROSOFT UNDER FIRE IN EUROPE -- AGAIN? | IDG A computer trade group in Europe is using the "a" word about Microsoft. The Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA) has complained to the European Commission's antitrust watchdogs about Windows XP, saying that it lets Microsoft keep its current monopoly game going and that it lets the company use that power to muscle into new markets. CCIA calls .NET on the carpet too, saying that XP herds customers towards the Passport authentication service. LIBERTY ALLIANCE RELEASES ID MANAGEMENT SPEC | InfoWorld Amid growing concern that it is being overshadowed by Microsoft's .NET Passport technology, The Liberty Alliance Project released a new specification Thursday to explain how the organization's federated identity model might one day coexist with Passport and other identity management systems. WANTED -- STAROFFICE TESTERS | IDG Wanted -- folks willing to try out a new StarOffice beta. Sun is looking for a few good users for Version 6.1, namely SMEs, developers and system administrators as well as general public testers for the testing program, which begins March 2. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ADDITIONAL SOLARIS AND INDUSTRY NEWS The headlines below and others are available on our news page. >> Full Stories: http://searchsolaris.techtarget.com/news/ - MICROSOFT PATENT APPLICATION COULD STIFLE STANDARDS (CNET) - BMC PATROL SUITS MEN'S WEARHOUSE FINE (SearchSystemsManagement) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= SEARCHSOLARIS.COM FEATURED TOPIC | 10 Solaris White Papers We scoured the Internet looking for the ten most informative Solaris white papers we could find. This week, an administrator writes: Does anybody know how I can map the mouse buttons to something on the keyboard? Many CAD programs make extensive use of the mouse buttons (and shifted mouse buttons) now that screen menus have almost totally replaced tablet menus. I have a number of users who would really like to be able to use the keyboard instead of right-clicking hundreds of times each day. >> To respond to this person's discussion forum post, CLICK: http://searchsolaris.discussions.techtarget.com/WebX?[EMAIL PROTECTED]@.1dcfa533/110!viewtype=convdate&skip=&expand= >> Start your own conversation in the one of our discussion forums. During the last couple of weeks, two people have hacked Kevin Mitnick's security consulting firm's site. One defaced it with a work of vandalism that read "welcome back to freedom," while another asked Mitnick for a job. Mitnick, the high priest of hack who just came back after years of online exile, didn't nitpick about the intrusions. He said that no customer data was compromised, so he's not calling the law.
