JAVA VERSUS C# -- NO NEED FOR WAR, JUST UNDERSTANDING

Too often the debates over cheaper, faster and better deteriorate
into religious wars. Just mention the sins of the Macintosh computer,
the Linux operating system or non-Intel silicon to get the argument
going. But as developers and programmers look for new jobs or move up
within their own organizations, they may debate the merits of being
proficient in both Java and Microsoft's C#. Yes, it's always ideal to
have both, but is the ideal really necessary? Experts and at least
one leading corporate user don't think so.

SOLARIS AND INDUSTRY NEWS

SUN REVEALS U.K. PRICES ON BLADES | ZDNet
The cost of Sun's mixed-processor blade servers are now on price tags
in the U.K. They'll start at £1,300 per blade, with 16 blades fitting
in a shelf for £3,500, and up to 12 shelves fitting in a chassis for
£3,900. A Sun exec says that even though the company has rolled out
an Intel-based blade, don't assume that this means SPARC will be less
of a priority.

SUN PUSHES NETWORK COMPUTING INITIATIVE ONLINE | InternetNews
This week marked a first for Sun. The company took to cyberpace to
hype its network computing event/product launch Monday. Sun's
takeover of Forbes.com during part of the day, wherein site visitors
were invited to click over to the big Web event, was a big part of
that "come see what we're doing" strategy.

MICROSOFT BARES MORE TEETH IN JAVA SCRAP | CNET
As certain as a sunrise in the east, Microsoft has asked an appeals
court to throw out a district court's order to ship Windows XP with
Sun's Java. The order has been in limbo while the court reviews the
case. Microsoft's lawyers say the order is "unprecedented" and will
do harm to the company. In the meantime, MS has promised to make Sun
Java available through Windows Update and the Service Pack 1 upgrade.

OPENLY HOSTILE -- 'PENGUINISTAS' TO PROTEST MS SPEAKER | IDG
Microsoft could get away with a booth at LinuxWorld, but having one
of its people speak at an open-source conference next month in
Washington, D.C. is evidently a little too much. Penguinistas plan to
protest Microsoft's presence at the conference, which is supposed to
promote open-source and free software to governments. An MS official
will be there to talk about the company's "shared source" initiative.

SUN SETS ON AVCOM TECHNOLOGIES | CRN
Remember Avcom Technologies? The company made a mint back in the
Sun-baked dot-com days. But now Avcom is getting out of Dodge --
jumping the IT solution provider ship because it can't make money
selling Sun-based products. Avcom says it still has money in the
bank, so it exits with its head up -- kinda like "Seinfeld."

FROM THE FORUMS | Mapping mouse buttons to the keyboard

Log-in to our discussion forum and see if you can help out a fellow
systems administrator.

This week, an administrator writes: Does anybody know how I can map
the mouse buttons to something on the keyboard? Many CAD programs
make extensive use of the mouse buttons (and shifted mouse buttons)
now that screen menus have almost totally replaced tablet menus. I
have a number of users who would really like to be able to use the
keyboard instead of right-clicking hundreds of times each day.

THE MISSING LINK | Political tensions eating into cheese biz

Keep your Camembert! Forget your "fromage." Viva Velveeta! Those are
the sentiments an e-cheese exporter in France has been seeing from
U.S. customers. Marc Refabert, the big cheese at Fromages.fr, says
his brie is in a bind because customers on the other side of the
Atlantic are unhappy that France does not support Washington when it
comes to Iraq. Customers are saying they just can't support France in
any way -- so please, no cheese. Refabert said he understands that
American customers are just being patriotic, and he thinks they'll be
back soon -- because French cheese is too tasty. (Reuters)
