The security hole could allow an outsider to overwrite data on a server and take it over. AtStake also said it notified Sun in May 2002 of the flaw, but never heard a response. SUN EYES A MORE VB-LIKE VERSION OF JAVA | eWEEK Sun is working on Java enhancements that will give developers working with the language an experience akin to Microsoft's developer-friendly Visual Basic. The strategy is seen as a way for Sun to draw greater numbers of developers to its way of thinking for Web services and application development. SUN, SAP SET UP JAVA CENTER | vnunet Sun has set up shop with SAP. McNealy and company have established a joint Java technology center at SAP's headquarters in Walldorf, Germany. R&D teams from both firms will be there assessing, promoting and perfecting Java technology for SAP's enterprise products, namely the Netweaver integration and application platform. FORRESTER: CIOS SHOULD BEWARE THE PENGUIN STAMPEDE | eWEEK The penguin is doing more and more enterprise waddling. Some fresh Forrester Research data show that more firms worldwide are using inexpensive Intel-based Linux servers to run their datacenter applications, ditching the pricier Windows and Unix platforms. The rampant growth of Linux could mean chaos for CIOs; Forrester says you can sidestep the insanity by automating the datacenter one server at a time, with a new managed deployment strategy. WEB STANDARDS BURNOUT DECRIED | InfoWorld A Sun Microsystems executive says the developer community is dangerously close to Web standards burnout. At the XML Web Services One conference, Sun engineer Jeff Suttor said standards have to be royalty-free, and they have to come from a community-based process rather than a proprietary one. A way to achieve this would be through patent-law reform, according to one conference panelist.
