As long as we're on the subject...
I have a Sony laptop with a LinkSys PCMCIA card.
At startup, the NIC fails - I am presuming because the network drivers load
before the PCMCIA drivers. When the PCMCIA drivers load, it double tones.
After I login, I merely service xinetd restart and then the NIC is working
fine. Since I can add that command to rc.local or as I have been doing,
simply manually executing my own startup script I don't mind but I am left
to wonder if there is a better method of making this happen automatically
(renumbering the startup scripts in init.d or ???)
