This is what I did to get my 7.1 box up working right in my NIS domain.
1) removed autofs that came with 7.1 iso
2) installed autofs4
3) made sure nfs, ypbind and autofs were started automatically using the ntsysv tool
4) moved S18autofs to S28autofs (by default it was starting before ypbind, not sure why
they did it that way)
5) made sure nis authentication was set using authconfig.
6) verified yp.conf was set
7) made sure domainname command returned proper domain name
Pretty simple once Forrest mentioned installing autofs4.
