Try this site www.linux3d.net/ati/sections/rage128_howto/index.shtml
notice the part in Section "Device" where is says "Chipid 0x5246" In order
to get my card working with x right i went though the Xconfigurator and
then inserted "Chipid 0x5246" in the XF86Config-4 file in the same
spot it is in the howto and started x
and then every thing worked fine.
