I've tried both. I think VMware wins for more compatible and easier to
configure. While both products require kernel modules, VMware's are less
intrusive and easier to handle. VMware will give your virtual hardware to
install a complete windows system inside, so everything works except
hardware accellerated video and externally attached devices (like USB,
scsi devices, scanners, the write functions of cd burners, etc) While
Win4Lin basically requires you run a kernel provided by their company as
it's heavily modified (and the provided kernel patches only work on stock
kernel.org kernels the last time I checked) so it doesn't patch with any
Red Hat kernels. If you do get Win4Lin running, you get the windows
programs running on the linux desktop as though they were linux programs
(sorta- they look a bit funky to me) although a lot fewer Windows programs
will run in Win4Lin than VMware, but it does do better than wine.

Personally, my money is literally with VMware, as I bought a personal
(home use) key for it. Don't expect great game performance, though. Also
installing the VMware video driver (inside windows) is a royal pain if it
doesn't go right the first time.
