This is an ongoing problem. I have it, too. And the only advice anyone has
ever given me has been to set pppd persistent in the options file. But that
does nothing to solve the problem of kppp dying without warning (in my case,
every time my phone line fluctuates for any reason) and leaving behind 3
processes that I have to kill (two of them owned by the user, one by root)
before I can restart it.

And I'm using RH 7.1 with KDE 2.1.2 (because I have not been able to
successfully upgrade to KDE 2.2)
