I think that if you read thru the excellent documentation at samba.org,
you will find that the way this works is to create a samba user named
root - root password is essential (smbpasswd -a root:root).
Then when you 'add the computer to the domain' and it asks you to supply
a user with sufficient privileges to join the machine to the domain -
this user must be root.
