Until recently I didn't make backups either. I don't have a tape
drive, so I thought it was just too complicated. (Which was
particularly stupid of me because all of my hard disks are
second-hand.) Two disk crashes later, I make backups. Incremental
ones every day. :)

I just thought I might could help point you to a viable solution. If
you have a CD Writer, I can suggest a Perl program called cdbkup.
I've been using it successfully now for several weeks, and it's really
easy to use. It supports breaking the files up across multiple cds
and incremental backups. I can't remember the URL, but you can find
it if you search Freshmeat. (I think that's where I found it.)

I wrote a python script to keep up with what backup level, disc set,
and exact command I need to execute on any given day. It also writes
an HTML calendar of the backup schedule, which I printed out. I'm
sure there are much better programs out there to do what I needed, but
I couldn't find one...plus it was fun. :) You're welcome to use the
script if you want--just email me off-list, and I'll send it to you.
BTW, it should work regardless of what software you use to actually
perform the backup.
