Correction: the 'bz' on bzImage doesn't mean bzipped. bzImage stands for
"big zImage" _I think_.

Is it a custom kernel? If so, the bzImage cutoff is somewhere after 950KB
or there abouts. Try cutting back on things you don't need or make certain
things as modules.
