Do you use NFS on your machine?  I have three RH 7.1 systems running
kernels which I compiled.  Everything runs fine until I use NFS (it is
always running, but I usually don't have any filesystems
mounted/exported).  Several times, I've had very strange things
happen--it eventually ends in programs failing to load (including
system progs like /bin/login), and having to reboot.  NFS is the only
thing I can link to these problems, and it's happened with more than
one kernel.

Some asked - but no - I was not hacked..... I'm also behind a firewall
and that was not hacked either.  Also, Antivir latest shows no viruses.
Only thing I could think of was a fairly recent crash which ext3 was
unable to recover from w/o first running fsck -t ext3 and fixing the
file system.  Did not notice this problem right away however so
I can't make a definite link.
