YES!! before that I can logon using either root or normal user.
Are you root, either from login or su ?
NOIf those 2 are true, then:
Is the root file system mounted read-only by chance?
If the system crashed, and fsck failed, this can happen.
if / is mounted ro, then you cannot write to the above
files, whiuch are usually on /.What does 'mount' show?
