Did it work before?

 
Are you root, either from login or su ?
YES!! before that I  can logon using either root or normal user.
 
 

If those 2 are true, then:
Is the root file system mounted read-only by chance?

NO
 
If the system crashed, and fsck failed, this can happen.
if / is mounted ro, then you cannot write to the above
files, whiuch are usually on /.

What does 'mount' show?
