When the tape process doesnt die,it shows that u have
a KERNEL level crash.

And kill will not work on level crashes.

Unfortunately there is no other way of circumventing
this other than a reboot on the machine.Restarting the
tape drive wont help.

U need to find out why the mt-f command crashed(if the
problem recurs).Are all ur tape modules (aic7xxx,sd st
etc in place).Next check connections
