Hi : I am going to take a shot in the dark on this one , and I COULD most definitely be wrong , so anyone on this list is more than welcome to correct me if I am ;)
'k7' sounds like an AMD system to me , and if that is the case , I'll wager that the problem has got nothing to do with your operating system or the application layer. I have an AMD Athlon system at home running Windows 98 ( tsk , tsk ). I use this computer for gaming , but even when the computer is not doing anything , it shuts off and reboots for no apparent reason. Just like that. I have had the PC checked out from top to bottom and everything looks OK. What's more , the PC hangs on quite a consistent basis , sometimes even before it reads the BIOS. This makes my self-indulgent game playing more frustrating than relaxing ;) I work for a software company that provides internet and time and attendance solutions for a variety of different clients , and one of our clients used an AMD system for an exchange server , and that company had the same types of hassles. After checking everything from RAM to hard drives , they replaced the entire motherboard with a PIII , and the problems dissappeared forever. The moral of the story : Don't run anything important on an AMD machine. They are great on performance , but crappy on stability. Go for an Intel Pentium processor instead. They are more expensive , but worth the lolly.
