I've used CAIN myself.  There doesn't appear to be a backdoor in it, at
least, it makes no attempts to 'phone home', and my firewall takes care of
any probes that might be looking for it...  Most anti-virus vendors regard
all password crackers as trojans since they assume that if one is on a
system, it must have been put there behind the users back, in which case
they'd want to know.  Technically, it is not a 'trojan' at all, but calling
it that just makes it easier to categorise, and is less likely to confuse
the average user.
