I would start with 2 things. 1. I would always check the archives of a mailing list before posting this type of question as it has likely been covered NUMEROUS times in the past.
2. The site that got you on to this mailing list (SecurityFocus.com) is the de facto standard for "what you need to learn". This site runs the gamut and whether you decide to focus on Windows or *nix (I think there is even some *BSD), they have it all covered. Many others may have some more specific replies (although my guess is that most of them are not going to reply until you make a real good faith effort), but until they do, I would spend my time looking all over SecurityFocus and looking in our archives for threads "newbie", "new to the scene", "Need some help" and so on as subjects. For example, just for grins and giggles, I went back to the first week that this list has in archives (http://www.securityfocus.com/cgi-bin/archive.pl?id=105&threads=0&start=2000-11-04&end=2000-11-10) and low and behold there is this same thread. I think if you check out the "Introductory texts" thread (later renamed "drink out of the fire hose (was RE: Introductory texts)"), you will probably find more than enough info. Enjoy your "drink out of the fire hose". :) JayW >>> "Servedio, John" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 10/19/01 11:47AM >>> I will be graduating with a BS in computer science in July and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction(web site or organization) as to what kinds of things I could specialize in, training, trade organizations and other ways to get started in the computer security field. Also is it good to get security certification on top of the bachelors degree, and what are the best certificates to get for non-vendor specific areas.
