You may also want to consider checking the files for information in the resource section of the file. Microsoft does this in order to maintain version information, etc...other companies do it as well, but not all. If you go to http://patriot.net/~carvdawg/perl.html, and take a look at finfo.pl, you can use something like this to easily derive the info. Drop me a line if there's something else...
