It really depends what you're backing up. For my own use I put a 
very simple backup script in my home directory in all of my shell
accounts that goes something like this: 
 
 cd ; tar cz | ssh myuser@mybox "dd of=~/backups/shellname.tar.gz"

This command line grabs all of the files out of the homedir on the
current machine, puts them into a compressed tar archive, and dumps
that archive over the network into a file on "mybox". Another 
option is to use a boot disk such as the OpenBSD installation 
floppy or the LinuxCare (I believe it was them) bootable business 
card which supports your network card and configuration. Not only
will this allow you to tar up the whole filesystem but you can 
also do backups of raw disks or partitions over the network.
