1.Someone's email box is full or closed 2. They are on vacation and stupidly autorespond to mail list postings. 3. They don't know how to configure their server or mail transport agent I have found a great way to avoid this for anyone using a Linux or Unix box. or server It is an app called TMDA (Tagged Message Delivery Agent) It is primarily used to reduce spam, but I have found it eliminates the autoresponders here, as well.
