IDS is an acronym that stands for Intrusion Detection System. Also referred to as a NIDS, or Network Intrusion Detection System. It is an application that sits on a desktop/server and sniffs packets on your network for malicious or questionable behavior. A great example of an application like this is Snort (www.snort.org) or Nessus (www.nessus.com).
