As others have pointed out... GnuPG (http://www.gnupg.org/). This works
well for Unix/Linux users since many favored email clients already have
GnuPG support built in. With Windows (and MacOS), it is a little more
problematic since GnuPG itself does not include a GUI frontent / plugins
like its PGP counterpart. However, there are people filling this gap.

I am just beginning to try some of these out. However, some of the URLs
I've been looking at include:

http://www.gnupg.org/frontends.html
http://www.geocities.com/openpgp/courrier_en.html

http://enigmail.mozdev.org/index.html
http://www.jumaros.de/rsoft/gpgshell.html
http://www3.gdata.de/gpg/
http://www.winpt.org/

Note that I've seen some grumblings about problems with earlier versions
of WinPT (although it seems new versions have since been posted).
GPGShell seems to get positive comments, although it is not Open Source
(which leads to discussions on whether this is an issue or not).
