I assume that you're using a OpenSSH client and server ..

sshd is closing the connection when your client tries to get the sshd banner (ssh 
protocol version, etc).

Do you have a line in /etc/hosts.deny like:
ALL: ALL - or - sshd: ALL ?

If it is there, you might want to add sshd: somehost, somehost in /etc/hosts.allow 
man hosts.deny && man hosts.allow  for more info about the syntax :)


.. If the server is from SSH Communications, this is configured in the sshd_config 
file. (Last time I used that implementation).
