What you're asking is the biggest no-no in the entire world. It causes distro wars, and there will be 10,000 postings on this thread now over people arguing. Try out all distros, see which one you like, and stick with it.
As for the "out of the box" security, I think that is the single worst phrase every conceived of. NOBODY should care about "out of the box security" because everything is insecure the second it comes out of the box, despite OpenBSDs claims and everything, it just doesn't matter on the "out of box security" because you are posting to a list where one of the most important things we do in our career is secure systems, we aren't concearned with "out of the box security" because we have to spend time securing the system, no matter what OS, no matter what distro. And if you don't want to concearn yourself with securing your system, and you're only concerned with out of the box security, then you're talking to the wrong mailing list. So my points here: Try out each of the distros and see which you like better, never ask a mailing list, or anything else for that matter which one is best or which one is more secure. "Out of box security" has no relavence, especially to this mailing list. I'm pretty much a LInux newbie, been using Redhat 7.0 up til recently when it decided to die. So, I was thinking of having a little look around at other distrbutions. I've read differing opinions about the ease of use of Slackware - what are your personal opinions? Is Slackware more secure 'out of the box'? From what I gather Slackware is a little harder to learn than Redhat, but a little more... configurable? Am I right? I have no problems with using the console and learning anything the hard way :D What advantages/disadvanages does Slackware 8.0 have over Redhat 7.0? Thanks, Thomas Madhavan
