Because you have added the mcaffe.com tag in messenger, so it keeps a connection open to it. I saw the same thing happen to me and it drove me crazy at first until I realized what was happening. And it doesn't protect you from viruses automatically, the connection is just to keep the mcafee page on msn messenger up to date.
