Haven't read the official documentation, but I suspect that PC/SC lite (if even it is needed) will understand USB card readers which conform to the standard profile without any extra middleware (the way MacOS does). AFAIK only Windows requires middleware for standard devices.
I'm sure Sun/Oracle provides what's needed for the built-in readers on their machines.
