[SaF] Motherboard and processor

Hello Everyone!
Is it always required to buy a new motherboard when you get a new processor?  
If not, how do I know if a new processor will be compatible with my current 
motherboard on one of my outdated desktops?  

What exact system info would be needed to determin these specs?
