OK... I found a site by Megatrends where I can download a small app that 
determines the motherboard ID and the BIOS info, and the PCI info.  (Bad 
thing is that it's in German, but I can work around that!)    

Instead of cracking the case, should I use this for the identification and 
then proceed?
