Here are a couple of programs you should get-

Text To Gif: This program will turn text into a Gif file. You can choose backgrounds, 
text
color, font, text size and other things.
It's shareware, but fully functional. The shareware version has a nag screen when you 
close the
program and it adds a tagline to the bottom of the Gif but that's easy to crop out 
using the
program described below.
Visit http://www.midnightskulker.com/ and click on the freeware or shareware link to 
get
TextToGif.

Next get Irfanview. It performs many simple graphics editing procedures including 
several
special effects, cropping, viewing, thumbnail creator, file converter and much more. 
It's free
and can be downloaded from here-

(Which I'm glad I looked up, I needed to update my version.)
