Those interested in the history of secret communications will likely
enjoy "The Code Book" ("The Evolution of Secrecy from Mary, Queen of
Scotts to Quantum Cryptography"), published by Doubleday (1999).

This book is basically non-technical, but enough of the nitty-gritty
is there to give an idea of what's involved.
