The problem with that API is that extending it cleanly requires
MediaWiki 1.12. However, MediaWiki also has an AJAX framework that's
been around for a lot longer and allows for clean extensions in older
versions (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Ajax). I've been
considering experimenting with this route.

I'm interested in this feature too. Actually I was researching MediaWiki
API (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API) and it seams to be quite simple
to extend for ask query implementation.
