Sounds like your belts are slipping under the increased load of the AC
compressor. Time for a new belt maybe?

As for antennas, contrary to popular belief, longer is not always better.

The whole idea to better reception is to match the wavelength of the signal
you are tuning into with the length of the antenna. Anyways those coily
things often seen on the bottom of the antenna or sometimes built into the
base of the antenna are called loading coils. They help to keep the physical
length of the antenna short while electrically they look to be the same
length to the radio waves floating around space.
