As the Sepsis Coordinator, I do all our data collection for all sepsis
patients. Only knowing the details as you have described them, I would count
that as a sepsis mortality as that was his (I assume) primary diagnosis for the
hospitalization. I too, question some of those types of cases, but there is no
objective way (to my knowledge) of how to count it any other way but as a
sepsis mortality. As you know, the heart is also affected by sepsis so perhaps
he had significant ischemic issues that resulted in his ultimate mortality.
The only way to be sure perhaps would be post mortem results. I see he had a
length of stay of 17 days … he obviously had significant problems to keep him
hospitalized for that duration. Our current average LOS is 9 days.

Subject: [Sepsis Groups] Mortality

I have a question:

A patient was admitted with septic shock, and we successfully treated him and
he survived to ICU discharge. Approximately 17 days later, he codes and dies on
the floor (unknown reason why) the day before he was slated to be discharged
from the hospital.

Does this really count against our sepsis mortality?
