The short answer that I see no one has provided yet is, yes...sepsis can be caused by a virus. Flu, for example, is referenced in this: http://www.sepsisalliance.org/sepsis_and/influenza/
During a recent educational push to launch our Code Sepsis, we discovered a few of our bedside nurses were under the impression that sepsis was limited to bacterial infections. Not sure where that was coming from, though...I hadn't ever heard it before and it hasn't been part of any of the sepsis education being provided in the decade I've worked here. Anyone know how such misinformation might have come about? Verna's question indicates that our folks weren't alone in this.... -- Sam Farrell, RN CCRN Intensivist Program Manager West Coast Critical Care Specialists office: 805.988.7004 fax: 805.988.7101 cell: 805.444.3730 wccriticalcare.com *CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE : This message and any included attachments are intended only for the addressee and may contain confidential information belonging to the sender that is legally protected.
