The short answer that I see no one has provided yet is, yes...sepsis can be 
caused by a virus. Flu, for example, is referenced in this:

During a recent educational push to launch our Code Sepsis, we discovered a few 
of our bedside nurses were under the impression that sepsis was limited to 
bacterial infections. Not sure where that was coming from, though...I hadn't 
ever heard it before and it hasn't been part of any of the sepsis education 
being provided in the decade I've worked here. Anyone know how such 
misinformation might have come about? Verna's question indicates that our folks 
weren't alone in this....
